Single Jersey Knitting

The knitted fabric face, which is produced in a single plate, which is known as single-layer knitted fabrics, is called the right loop (R), and the surfaces that look like the left loop (L) on the reverse are called the surface (RL). These surfaces refer to the fabric types produced in flat knitting machines, single plate circular knitting machines, single plate single jersey machines.

Single-plate knitting produced in single-plate knitting machines stands out as the most common basic knitting surface used. Because it has a very simple structure. The front surface image is completely different from the rear surface view. This knit, which consists entirely of loops, consists of a flexible and unstable surface. Therefore, edge folds are susceptible to twisting.

Single Jersey Fabric and Knit Surface Image

Single jersey knitted fabrics can be produced with single-layer yarns, additional yarns, or double-layer yarns in various variations. There are varieties such as heavy single jersey, lycra single jersey, and melange single jersey. However, different single jersey fabrics are obtained with the patterning method. These fabrics are not stable and tend to turn upside down when they exit the machine. These rotation tendencies can be prevented with the finishing processes. These fabrics are widely used especially in underwear and summer sportswear.

Single Jersey Fabric Features

The general properties of this fabric can be listed as follows:

  • The front and back faces are different,
  • It is a fabric that can be produced in open width or tubular form,
  • It is possible to obtain wider widths than other knitted fabrics,
  • It stretches both longitudinally and transversely, but has the lowest stretch compared to other fabrics, The knitting report consists of at least 1 needle and 1 thread movement on a single needle plate (the normal knitting pattern consists of two needles side by side and two rows of stitches on top of each other),
  • Since the fabric is formed on a single plate, the amount of yarn consumed is minimal,
  • Dimensional stability is low,
  • It can be distorted when it stretches,
  • Its adaptability to body movements is low compared to other single yarn knitted fabrics due to its low flexibility,
  • There is bending from the sides towards the back of the fabric and from the top and bottom towards the front of the knitting,
  • It has the lowest patterning opportunity compared to other knits,
  • Since the structure of the single jersey fabric is bulky, it has good absorbency due to its moisture absorption feature.
  • The loops that deteriorate in the event of the thread breakage cause the loop loops to slip, that is to say, the thickness of the knitted fabric is lower, provided that the raw material used remains the same,
  • They vary between thin, light open structure and heavy structures,
  • The cutting and sewing process is problematic due to its stretching feature,
  • Partly used in underwear and widely used in the summer outerwear industry,
  • They do not require much ironing, they easily lose their wrinkles.
